A Vibrant Space Designed to Grow
Step inside our latest design adventure: a delightful room crafted for a bright 6-year-old boy! We kicked off the project by spending quality time with our young client and his family, delving into their lives and imagining how this space would grow with him.
Our little client had one big request: a colourful room! Every time we asked about his favourite colour, his cheerful answer remained the same—”rainbow!” We knew we had to capture all that joyful energy in his space. His north-east facing room enjoys gorgeous morning light but tends to feel a bit cooler and shadier in the afternoons. To keep the space cosy and bright all day long, we opted for a warm vanilla paint with a yellow hint, seamlessly extending this hue to the existing wardrobe, which we refreshed with new handles. The fun and playful pieces used for the wardrobe handles were actually wall hooks that our skilled builder cleverly adapted, adding another layer of charm and interest.
The Memphis design style turned out to be the perfect match. Known for its bold colours and playful shapes, it mirrors the building blocks and wooden toys he loves. This approach allowed us to gather all his favourite things—rainbow hues and whimsical forms—without being tied to a single colour theme. We then splashed vibrant colours across the furniture and custom built-ins to reflect his boundless energy and creativity.
Playful & Personal Touches
A unique touch we added was a built-in chess board on a foldable wing, perfect for family game nights and reflecting their shared love for the game. We also included a generously sized counter—ideal for spreading out toys, tackling LEGO masterpieces, or getting homework done, with room for a parent to sit comfortably alongside.
For efficient cost control, we opted for a ready-made bookcase, customising it by adding our own sourced legs and painting it to match the room’s vibrant scheme. Displaying treasured items was important, so we created sleek, ultra-thin shelves that keep the room feeling open while putting his favourite things within easy reach. And for creative expression, a magnetic chalkboard wall was bordered with fun dominoes and LEGO pieces to add charm and interest with kid-friendly elements, while a craft paper dispenser makes it simple to draw, practise words, or display new masterpieces. We even chose a Katy Paty red light switch, which, being ceramic and handmade, perfectly kept up with the fun theme of colours and round shapes.
The Persian rug we sourced perfectly complements the room with its bright colours and geometric patterns.
Smart Solutions for Evolving Needs
The bed was an urgent purchase two years prior to the room’s design execution, and we helped the family source it. This time around, we added a bespoke floor mattress and lighting to transform the space into a cosy reading and sleepover spot. The mattress’s neutral colour was intentionally chosen to complement the bed frame and allow the room’s main focal point—the desk and shelves—to remain in the limelight.
